NMS Security Officers Daniel Gaston and Brent Day are being honored with the NMS Crisis Intervention Award for their bravery during a serious incident on Alaska’s North Slope in January. While escorting the biggest rig in the region, known as “The Beast,” the rig suddenly tipped off the roadway, overturned onto its side, and immediately caught fire. Two personnel were inside the rig at the time, creating an urgent and dangerous situation.
Demonstrating remarkable composure and awareness, Gaston and Day quickly assessed the scene and took action with safety as their main focus. The officers retrieved fire extinguishers from their vehicles and hurried toward the burning rig, working together with precision to suppress the expanding flames. Their efforts created vital time and space for the trapped personnel to escape the overturned rig despite the hazardous conditions.
After both individuals were able to exit, Gaston and Day continued applying fire suppressant to maintain a safe path away from the rig before the fire grew beyond their control. They assisted the personnel to safety, moved them away from the hazard area, and secured the roadway to prevent additional vehicles or personnel from entering the scene while emergency responders were mobilized.
The professionalism, courage, and selfless service demonstrated by Daniel Gaston and Brent Day reflect the very best of NMS. Their calm, safety-focused response in an extremely dangerous situation helped protect lives and prevent further harm.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Officers Gaston and Day for their heroic actions and the daily care they show in keeping others safe.
